The Best Shearling Jackets for Men
The short answer
The best shearling jacket is real merino sheepskin, leather on the outside and dense wool inside, in a style that matches how you spend your winter. For most men that is a waist-length shearling bomber in the B-3 tradition: the warmest jacket you can comfortably drive and move in. If you need more coverage for real cold, choose a hip-length shearling barn coat or blazer. If you run warm or live somewhere mild, a shearling vest will do more work than you'd think.
Whatever brand you buy, check four things: wool that grows out of a hide, dense and even merino pile, supple leather, and heavy, reinforced construction. Expect to pay $700 to $1,500 for one that will last twenty winters.
I am the founder of a company that makes shearling jackets, so take my picks with that in mind. I'll tell you exactly what each of ours is for, who it isn't for, and what the people who own them say, including the complaints. The checklist further down applies to anybody's jacket, and I would rather you buy a good shearling from someone else than a bad one from anyone.

Best overall: Shearling Leather Bomber Jacket
This is the jacket that built our shearling line. It is a direct descendant of the B-3 that Eighth Air Force crews wore at 25,000 feet, refined for the ground: waist length, a clean shearling collar, no costume buckles, full grain leather outside and natural merino wool inside. YKK zippers, an adjustable snap at the waist, two side-entry hand pockets.
Colors: Espresso Brown (the most versatile), Grizzly Brown (weathered), Whiskey Brown (warm and light), Sandstone Brown (light and dusty) and Black.
Who it's for: anyone who wants one serious winter jacket that works over denim and flannel on Saturday and over a sweater and chinos on Monday. The short length makes it easy to drive and sit in.
Who it isn't for: men who want coverage below the waist in deep cold. Look at the barn coat.

The Durango is a barn coat built from Turkish merino shearling, with a vintage cut that nods to the ranch coats of the 1970s, oversized buttons and deep front pockets. It is longer than the bomber, covering the hips, and that extra length is where much of its warmth comes from.
Who it's for: men who spend long days outside in real cold, and anyone in the northern plains, the mountain West or New England who wants the warmest thing we make.
Who it isn't for: commuters who drive a lot, or anyone in a mild climate. It is a lot of coat.

Once you own one
A shearling jacket asks very little: brush it, hang it on a wide hanger with some air around it, keep it away from heat, and let it dry slowly if it gets soaked. What is the best shearling jacket for men?
For most men, a real merino shearling bomber: warm enough for serious winter cold, short enough to drive and move in, and versatile enough to wear with jeans or chinos. Men who spend long days outside in deep cold are better served by a hip-length shearling barn or rancher coat.
What is the warmest shearling jacket?
A longer shearling coat, such as a barn or rancher coat, with a high collar. Covering the hips and lower back holds far more heat than a waist-length jacket. Among ours, the Durango Shearling Barn Coat is the warmest.
Is a shearling jacket worth the money?
If you live somewhere with a real winter and buy a well made one, yes. A good shearling jacket lasts decades and softens with wear, so a $900 jacket worn for twenty winters costs about $45 a year. Cheap faux shearling rarely lasts more than a few seasons.
How much does a good shearling jacket cost?
Roughly $700 to $1,500 for a well made real shearling jacket from an established maker. Designer labels and specialty hides go well beyond that. New jackets under about $400 are almost always sherpa or faux shearling.
What should I look for in a shearling jacket?

Do shearling bomber jackets run small?

Is a shearling bomber or a shearling coat better?
A bomber is better for driving, everyday wear and moving around. A hip-length coat is better for long periods outside in deep cold. If you only buy one and your winters are moderate to cold, the bomber is the more versatile choice.

Can you wear a shearling jacket in the rain?
Light rain and snow are fine, especially on leather-out shearling, which sheds water. Avoid soaking it in heavy rain, and if it does get soaked, let it dry slowly at room temperature away from any heat.
